During the week African Development Bank VP visited orphans in Sierra Leone

On Wednesday the 19th of March, Susan Wardell the Vice President of Corporate Services at the African Development Bank (AfDB) arrived the Capital of Sierra Leone to hold meetings with NERC, UNMEER, WHO, Ministers of Finance and Health, President Ernest Bai Koroma, UN Country Team, NGOs and also visited the Aberdeen Women Center, Kerry Town Ebola Treatment center, and the St Georges Children’s Foundation center in Grafton.

The visit was in line with the visit made by the Bank’s President last year to scale up support to tackle the ebola outbreak.


At the Aberdeen Women Center, where the visit started on Thursday with officials of the Bank , was taken on a conducted tour of the facilities by Dr Jerindine George. The Vice President spoke with the hospital staff on the operations of the center. She was told how beneficial the center is to poor women in the country. Madam Wardell appreciated services the   center has been rendering to women and commended the staff for giving quality treatment to women and children.


At the St Georges Children’s Orphanage Center, the Vice President interacted and sang with the children who are orphans and Ebola survivors. The children who were traumatised felt relieved after Madam Wardell interacted  and read books together with them.


The Director of the Center , Justina Zainab Conteh, explained that the children are traumatised but with their persistent physococial support given they are coping with life.
She said the center is a non-governmental organisation which started operations in 2004 for street children. She added that for the past six months they have registered 2000 children and have helped  over 700 children  with  packages and unification with their families.
After socializing with the children, the Vice President, commended the children for the song they sang for her  and for the staff for taking good care of the children.


One of the children, Aminata Lappia, thanked the Vice President and her team for the visit and hoped that more support will be given to the centre to restore happiness in their lives as most of them are orphans and Ebola survivors.


At the Kerry Town Ebola Treatment Center, she was also taken on a tour by the Operations Director, Ascension Martinez of the facilities. She was told of the combination of different workers that has led to the many success stories of the centre.


Madam Martinez stated that currently there are six   patients at the centre as has over  200 has  been   discharged.


In an interview after the visit, she expressed satisfaction of what she saw from all the places she visited and people she met.


She commended the President and the people of Sierra Leone for their commitment and support to contain the Ebola virus.
