Following confirmation by the family of Itai Dzamara that, a week after his disapearence, they still do not know his whereabouts, University of Zimbabwe students have taken to the streets.
Dr Patson Dzamara addressed a press conference and said, "we can categorically confirm that in spite of all our efforts in partnership with our legal team to locate Itai Dzamara or to at least gain knowledge as to what really transpired after his abduction, no tangible movement has been registered thus far."
He said the family did not know where Itai was, and was grateful for the support they were receiving from many individuals and organizations.
He said the family did not know where Itai was, and was grateful for the support they were receiving from many individuals and organizations.
He repeated that Itai, the organiser of Occupy African Unity Square, was abducted on Monday the 9th of March from a barber’s shop in his neighborhood by five men, who handcuffed him and accused him of stock theft. The same men had been noticed roaming Itai’s neighborhood in two vehicles.
Dr Patson was clearly trying to avoid accusing the state directly, but it is clear from his statement, and many analysts also believe, that it can only be the state through the Central Intelligence Organisation, which kidnapped him.
He said the family perceived "a bigger hand in this" and unequivocally reject the notion that this is a grandstanding effort masterminded by Itai and his colleagues.
"It seems as though some people know where he is and we are appealing to them and the State to help us find Itai.
"We are certainly not enjoying this period. It is hard for us. This is not a joke. We believe if there is anyone out there who genuinely has any information or theory regarding his whereabouts, he or she as a responsible citizen must approach the authorities and assist with information."
He dismissed speculation and theories that Itai had ran away which were published by a Zanu (PF) activist and the family has engaged lawyers to deal with them.
Meanwhile the students have taken to the streets of Harare with police riot squard not far behind.
